COVID-19 Updates

Guidance for Responding to COVID-19 Cases

Dear Managers and Department Chairs: 

We wanted to take the opportunity to ensure that you are familiar with our campus protocols in the event you are notified that a student, faculty or staff (who has been on campus) has tested positive for COVID-19. 

  1. Contact Janell Morillo, Associate Vice President, Student Health, Counseling and Wellness,                            immediately at 559.278.0276 or and complete this online form.

  AVP Morillo will notify the appropriate individuals, including the Vice President for Administration, Director of        Environmental Health and Safety, and the Fresno County Department of Public Health.

Once the initial report is received, the campus will take the following immediate actions: 

  • Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) will:
  • Determine where the employee has been, identify any individuals who they have been in contact with, and assess if anyone should self-quarantine due to possible exposure.
  • Determine if any campus areas need to be closed for a period of time. 
  • Provide guidance for managers about communication and support to employees if they were in direct contact with the individual who tested positive. It is important that managers reassure their team that their safety and welfare is our top priority and remind them of the actions the campus is taking.
  • Notify Human Resources to initiate the Workers’ Compensation claim process, as appropriate.
  • Facilities Operations (Custodial Services) will be notified immediately to coordinate the cleaning and disinfecting of required areas, and will coordinate with EH&S, as appropriate. This is in addition to the rigorous cleaning protocols that are already in place.
  • If an employee tests positive for COVID-19, a release from their healthcare provider will be necessary prior to returning to work. They may use available leave to cover their period of absence.

   2. Notify your immediate supervisor, AVP, or Dean.

   3. As a reminder, this information is confidential. After you have provided Janell the name of the                        individual (and completed the online form) it is your responsibility to take reasonable steps to protect          the confidentiality of the individual. Please do not identify the individual by name or make other                    references that would possibly identify the individual.
What you should communicate to your employees if they have been potentially exposed to someone who has tested positive:

  • Encourage employees to follow guidance from their healthcare provider. 
  • The employee is required to stay home for a minimum of 14 days per Fresno County Department of Public Health recommendations.
  • If it is not operationally feasible to telecommute, there are a number of leave options available. 

What you should do if an employee reports they do not feel well (or shows signs of illness when reporting to work):

  • Employees who have any of the following symptoms are required to stay home and NOT come to campus: 
  • Fever (100.4 degrees F or higher) or feeling feverish or have chills.
  • Respiratory symptoms including cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, and/or runny nose.
  • The employee is required to stay home for a minimum of 7 days per Fresno County Department of Public Health recommendations.
  • Encourage the employee to seek advice from their healthcare provider.
  • Direct employees to available testing sites in the county
  • There are a number of leave options available if telecommuting is not feasible. 

Important Reminders and Resources

  • Wear a face covering (see April 13 communication).
  • Practice physical distancing.
  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Use hand sanitizers provided. 
  • Stay home if sick or if anyone in household is suspected COVID-19 positive
  • It is recommended that employees working on campus email their manager each day to confirm they are not ill and not experiencing any of the above symptoms. Please refer to the Voluntary Health Screening communication for the campus process established on March 30.

More information and guidance for repopulation will be provided once the campus receives approval of the proposed campus plan for Fall 2020 from the Chancellor’s Office.
